SMNE Summer Champs were delayed for the 2021 season (due to yet another Covid lockdown) but that did not dampen the spirits of the mighty Piranhas!
80 Piranhas competed in 320 events and 19 Relays to come out 2nd to Knox Pymble in the overall Club point score. In a new Covid friendly format, Summer Champs this year was held at SOPAC on Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th January with ages split into the 12 & unders and the 13 & Overs.
Although it was a weekday competition and many of our regular swimmers were away on a much needed holiday, our team showed the Area that we’re a force to be reckoned with. The highlight of the day was the very exciting Mens 4 x 50m Medley relay with our boys taking out 1st, 2nd and 3rd in a nail biting finish! Overall, our 19 Relay Teams took out 3 Gold, 3 Silver, and 4 Bronze showing amazing depth of talent in our squads.
The individual medal count was 23 Gold, 28 Silver, 23 Bronze for a total of 74 medals, 2nd in the medal count behind Knox Pymble. 50 of our swimmers managed 119 PBs, a massive effort after such an interrupted training season! A special mention to Jocelyne who took out 6 Individual Golds and 1 Individual Silver (youngest competitor in the 200FR) and 2 Relay Team Golds! Phew, I bet Joce slept well that night!
