April was a HUUUUGE Month for our National Swimmers, our biggest team in history with 38 swimmers at MC & Age and 4 swimmers in Opens.
The highest age group level competition in Australia began with MC events, our youngest competitor Gemma Sellick (12 yrs) swam PBs in 6 heats, 6 finals and picked up 3 GOLD and 2 SILVERS in tough weather conditions which included hot sun, strong gusty winds, heavy rain and a lightning storm! Well done on such an amazing first Nationals experience Gemma! Gemma’s efforts resulted in Warringah coming in 28th on the MC Point score.
Able bodied events started on the 3rd day with our 37 swimmers competing with the best of the best in Australian age group swimming in 131 Individual events, 16 Club Relays and 4 State Relays. Our strong and enthusiastic Piranha team showed their depth and strength winning an incredible 31 Medals (more than tripling our previous results) and ended up 4th IN THE COUNTRY in the final Age point score – WOOHOO!!!!
After a short day between comps, the Open Nationals kicked off with all four of our competitors competing against Australia’s best swimmers. It was extremely tough 4 days of competition under sunny skies with our swimmers competing in 10 individual events and qualifying for 4 finals.
No one could miss us in our fluoro pink Okanui hats and shorts and we were the talk of the meet with one commentator stating “hands down, the best hats at this meet” – thank you Okanui for your invaluable support as always. Congratulations team, you did us all proud with the final pointscores from over 300 Clubs as follows:
MC Events – 28th
Age Events – 4th
Combined point score – 5th in the country!
Special mention to Sam Higgs (400IM), Luke Higgs (800FR) and Lachlan Davies (50BF) for making the Australian Top Ten All Time Rankings – up there with the Olympians!
A massive thanks to our coaches, Cameron, Lachy, Sandi and Narelle who were on deck from early morning to late evening every day. Special thanks to Cameron who soldiered on before, during and throughout both MC, Age and Open Nationals for 16 days straight! Your dedication to our team is second to none and we appreciate you all very much – THANK YOU!!
